Our Thoughts Exactly: 2026 Subaru Outback Limited XT

A few months ago, we received a 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness – and got it dirty.

Wasn’t it what you’re supposed to do when presented with a. vehicle that promotes itself as an adventure vehicle that can go off highway. 

The point of working with the 2026 Outback Wilderness was not because of its capabilities. It is to see how much this popular ruggedized wagon has transformed into its new role as the brand’s mid-size two-row SUV. 

In short, we love the transformation Subaru made on their popular Outback. We said in our previous review: “The quality, technology, and drivability blew our expectations wide open. It is the kind of vehicle Subaru owners should step up – and over – to.”

That is a glowing summation. Because we think Subaru nailed the new generation model perfectly. 

Yet, we need further proof that the 2026 Outback has become a better vehicle to fulfill its new mission. The Wilderness trim is angled towards those who live the active outdoorsy lifestyle. 

But what about the rest of us? 

Keep in mind that the Wilderness is one of six trim levels available on the 2026 Outback. We just happen to have a more…ahem…”normal” version. 

The Limited trim level is a step up from Premium – which is their gateway model for the 2026 Outback. However, this has the more powerful 260-horsepower 2.4liter turbocharged BOXER four-cylinder engine. In essence, the Limited XT is seen as an equal – price-wise – to the Wilderness. 

Yet, being “normal” has its advantages. Based on your feedback, not everyone was a fan of the Wilderness exterior package. The bronze-like finishes, the aggressive grille/frontal protection package, and the placement of the rear lighting signatures were seen as “turn-offs” by some of you. 

For those of you who have said your piece on the 2026 Outback Wilderness will like the Limited XT better visually. Then first thing you will notice is the grille. As assertive as it looks, it just feels cleaner. The star logo shines even in the stark dark finish of then front fascia. 

The 2026 Outback Limited XT is devoid of flash, extra badges, and contrasting finishes. Again, I use the word “clean.” That continues in the rear, with its horizontal LED lighting signatures. The badges are dark finished, and the rear bumper trim has the Subaru name embossed. You can also add the 19-inch dark finished alloy wheels to finish up this gray colored SUV. In all, I feel that this 2026 Outback Limited XT is a handsome vehicle. 

The word handsome continues to describe what’s inside. The dark finished leather seating is very comfortable, while the front seats are big and offer plenty if support. We previously remarked about the increase in space in the back seat, as well as in the cargo hold. All thanks to the taller cabin space. 

When it comes to the driving environment, I am ever grateful for the advances Subaru made on the Outback. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is colorful, clear and great to look at. The readouts are easy to decipher, too. Couple that with great controls on the steering wheel and on the automatic climate control system on the center stack.

It worth repeating that the 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen was equally beautiful look at and quick to operate. To do anything – setting presets, connecting the phone, and using voice commands – was simply smile-inducing. 

The 2026 Limited XT also wears some cloth trim on the dashboard and door cards. In all, I appreciate the softer surfaces of the trim. We should remind ourselves that this is not the top shelf grade. Yet, the cloth pieces are a nice touch, even with the leather seating upholstery. 

All of this brings up a question – is the Limited XT the way to go? Or, should I get the ruggedized route with the Wilderness?

The one thing in common between these two versions if the 2026 Outback is that turbocharged BOXER engine. It outs down plenty of power, which I like. The torque curve makes the difference when you’re on the highway. Getting around town was equally wonderful. 

However, it is the tires that make the difference. Yes, one would prefer the 9.5-inch ground clearance compared to the scabbard 8.7 inches. Yet, the all-season tires on the Limited XT make things quieter. More serene. Thoroughly enjoyable. That makes all the difference in the world. 

One data point I must point out is the fuel economy. We averaged 25.3 MPG in our care. It was what I expected with the XT turbocharged engine. 

As for the price, this 2026 Subaru Outback Limited XT test vehicle came with a sticker price of $45,815. 

Working with two different 2026 Outback models make things a bit difficult to make comparisons or to decipher clear winners. However, it confirms that there is an Outback for everyone. Different personalities with different intended purposes. Variety is indeed the spice of life. 

There are a few takeaways from this. The 2026 Subaru Outback is one of the mist improved vehicles in the marketplace. The elevated technology, increased cabin and cargo space, and a no-nonsence approach to the mid-size two-row SUV are boxes that tick quite easily After driving two of them, it is clear that a lot of serious effort has been made to raise the Outback’s profile. 

The result is a recent jump in sales – a 32 percent increase month-to-date in June of 2026. 

That sounds like it is a truly a winner.
