Our Thoughts Exactly: 2026 Ford Ranger
Which brings us to this 2026 Ranger. It is a specification that represents value for money, along with capability and capacity.
When it comes to pickup trucks, Ford is still the leader. And, not just in North America.
In various markets, the Ford Ranger is up there on many sales charts every year. Simply put, if you’re looking for a sturdy, reliable rig for work and play, just see what’s on the jobsite, the jungle, the vast desert, or deep in the forest.
However, some markets outside of North America are witnessing a shift in pickup truck supremacy of sorts. Yes, a certain Japanese-based company rules practically every market. However, it is the less expensive Chinese automakers that are encroaching fast at both that certain Japanese automaker and Ford.
We will not get into the argument of whether those new payers have the chops of a Ranger. Mainly because I do not work in those markets.
However, the Ranger still makes sense over here. For one, the prices of the F-Series are rising like crazy. The other is the Maverick is gaining steam because it has found a wide swath of customers looking for something more affordable and efficient.
Which brings us to this 2026 Ranger. It is a specification that represents value for money, along with capability and capacity. The XLT trim is a step up from the work/fleet-grade XL, yet it offers a bit more in terms of features. Ford added a Sports Appearance Package to our test vehicle with its blacked-out trim from the grille to the 18-inch alloy wheels. You also get some decals at the rear of the bed.
The 2026 Ranger XLT sports an eight-inch digital instrument cluster that has clean Ford design. The fuel and temperature gauges have those pointers as seen on the 2025 Maverick Lobo we just reviewed. The controls are tactile and logical, including the chunky shifter in the center console.
In the middle is a portrait-oriented and lengthy 10-inch touchscreen display. It houses a lot of vehicle functions, including the climate control. It also is the hub for connectivity, including smartphone mirroring. Sound is pumped through six standard speakers.
The XLT feels right with a two-tone cloth upholstery on their seats. Headroom was superb for taller drivers and rear seat passengers. Rear seat legroom was also fine.
Powering our 2026 Ranger XLT is the available EcoBoost 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6. It puts down 315 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic delivers power to all four wheels through a two-speed transfer case. It can tow up to 7.500 pounds, while carrying 1,513 pounds of payload. For fuel economy, we observed an average of 20.2 MPG. We actually achieved higher numbers throughout our time especially on highway runs.
The ride quality varied depending on surface. In all, it absorbed the bumps and rougher sections of road just fine. Handling-wise, there is a bit of roll and lean through the turns at speed. In all, it does maneuver around hazards quite nimbly.
The turning radius on the 2026 Ranger was fine. On-center feel also felt fine, as well as overall response. The brakes start with a solid pedal feel and response. We experienced decent stops in normal and panic situations.
The 2026 Ford Ranger is available in four trim levels, along with final drive options and engines. Pricing starts at $35,550. Our 4X4 XLT SuperCrew test vehicle came with a sticker price of $49,600.
Since it was re-introduced to North America in 2019, the Ford Ranger brought back customers looking for something smaller and more affordable than the F-150. The 2023 refresh certainly helped its cause with its design alignment with the rest of the pickup truck lineup. With more available drivelines than its competitors, Ford continues to deepen its commitment to their mid-size pickup truck by offering what customers need and want at the same time.
We also must be reminded that this is a global product. One that makes its home from. Thailand to South Africa, Australia to Argentina, and everywhere else on this planet it is sold. To that end, the 2026 Ranger works by being versatile and capable in concert with its rivals here in the USA.
In all, this 2026 Ranger is really a solid pickup truck. One that does the job day in and day out. The upshot of this specification – the XLT with Sport Appearance Package, the EcoBoost 2.7-liter V6, and four-wheel drive – is it delivers relatively good value without drawing a lot of attention to itself. It is just right for someone looking for than a work/fleet pickup truck to tool around in – even after work is done for the day.
