Our Thoughts Exactly: 2025 Toyota Prius

October 26, 2025 by Randy Stern

There has been one word that never described the Toyota Prius. Not in its 24 years of existence in the USA.

Let’s go back to the year 2001…

Back then, the Toyota Prius was nothing to write home about. With some design traits from the Echo subcompact sedan, the Prius made it clear what its intensions were. To be different in every way possible.

It certainly was different. It gave us new design ideas that masked its advanced driveline. The combination of a gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine and battery-fed electric motor signaled the 21st Century more than any piece of science fiction.

What happened over the next 24 years was extraordinary.

Five generations later, we have a completely different Prius than once imagined. One that befits its science fiction aspirations. Today, it is a contemporary hybrid that is sleek, compared to its direct rivals.

There has been one word that never described the Toyota Prius. Not in its 24 years of existence in the USA.

Fun.

Your idea of fun may vary. But, one look at this 2025 Prius Nightshade in its Mustard paint job could tell you otherwise. The yellow paint job actually extenuates this sleek shape of this next fifth generation model. The lower body style also adds a panoramic roof. However, this is really all about the 19 -inch black finished alloy wheels that make this condiment color pop even more.

The Nightshade package also includes black finishes and other parts of the body from the door handles to the additional black roof trim and rear taillight area. In all, you could look back at this Prius and ask yourself “is that what it really is?” The quick answer is, “it certainly is.”

The same could be said about the Prius’ interior. The new dashboard design has been with us for a few years. It is better and more functional than before. The big difference is having the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver instead of in the middle. Along with a smaller steering wheel, the controls do seem familiar and work as logically. We should also mention that the transmission actuator was originally designed for the Prius back in the second generation. And, it still works!

Our test vehicle received the upgraded 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with eight JBL speakers. It is a quality sound that reaches to up to five people inside. You also have the usual wireless smartphone connectivity with a clever wireless charging slot.

Passengers sit on SofTex upholstery front and back. While there is ample room inside, front seat occupants get a comfortable space with some bolstering and support. The driver seat receives power adjustments, as well.

Cargo space is quite ample. There is 20.3 cubic feet with the rear seats up. You can fold down the rear seats for longer items.

The standard Prius’ hybrid driveline included a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, sending power to the front wheels. Combined, this delivers a net output is 194 horsepower.

Overall, the hybrid’s performance was fine. Power take off has improved over the generations, making getting on the highway and cruising at speed easier.  However, you will find the Prius living its best life around town, as it scampers between errands with authority. We observed an average of 47.7 MPG in terms of fuel economy.

The overall ride quality was smooth and confident. Rougher roads were controlled with superb dampers. The handling was on the softer side when doing evasive maneuvers.

The small steering wheel yielded a solid turning radius. The Prius also exhibited a solid on-center feel. We also liked the brakes with its solid pedal feel. It also delivered good stops in normal and panic situations.

There are eight trim levels available on the 2025 Toyota Prius. There is a choice of front or all-wheel drive models. Pricing starts from $28,350. Our Nightshade test vehicle came with a sticker price of $36,338.

For what it's worth, the 2025 Prius offers a stylish, sleek and sustainable package that should be considered when looking at hybrid vehicles. No, it is not a crossover or SUV. However, there is still a market for hatchbacks that work well in many different communities.

The formula has remained the same, even with a different look. However, the newest generation Prius looks pretty damn sharp. Maybe something to consider when looking at one?

It is worth repeating that the Prius is the original hybrid vehicle. We should also add that it is the most enduring electrified vehicle on sale today. It remains relevant because of the legacy it continues after 24 years of being different than the rest.

And yes, it is fun to drive.
