Detroit 2013: A Preview
This work is about to reach another major milestone.
This has been my reality for the past two years. The pace and growth of this has been staggering. This automotive work simply became simply a series of amazing opportunities.
Attending media days at the Chicago Auto Show is one thing. Being invited by a manufacturer to join them for breakfast at the same show is another. Then, review subjects began arriving at my home. Next thing you know it, I fly off to a place I have never been before to drive a vehicle not yet on sale.
Rather, having three outlets to espouse my observations and insights on this mechanical wonder we call the automobile.
I did not ask for all of this directly – not in the two years that my radar beacon began to glow brightly. It was all a given. It came at the right place in my life. I am still floating on air, despite being grounded in a form of reality nine Minnesota winters would dictate upon a former Californian.
To think that I could not add a new plateau to this work – something else dropped in my lap. Something that is bigger in importance and prestige. Something I never thought would be possible – considering airfares, transportation logistics and lodging rates.
Therefore, I am going to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
This will be my first time at the most important auto show in North America. At Cobo Hall, a slew of debuts and revisions will be trotted out to an eager global audience. Already announced to be unveiled in Detroit are the Chevrolet Corvette C7, Cadillac ELR, Lexus IS, Infiniti Q50, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 4-Series, Audi SQ5 and RS5 cabriolet – to name a few. Expect a few more surprises to show up next week.
I will be there during Media Days, but on specific assignments. Currently, I cannot divulge what is on my agenda since there are several details being finalized at this time. If all goes accordingly, you should be able to get a series of written postings and accompanying photography on here and my Flickr page to soak in the experience at Cobo Hall.
If you are on Twitter, you may get to see an oft tweet from me. I will be using the #VnRChat hashtag in case I do lean on my Blackberry to broadcast to the world. Also, some dispatches may pop up on the V&R Facebook page, as well.
There is one promise I will make to you: If I do miss anything in Detroit, it will be covered at the Chicago Auto Show next month. This will mark my sixth year covering the big show at McCormick Place. In fact, I consider Chicago my main auto show to cover – next to my own local event, the Twin Cities Auto Show.
But, for this year, I will finally arrive in Detroit. That, I am looking forward to.
Next week will be unprecedented – and that is truly not an exaggeration. Stay tuned and come along for the ride to the Motor City. Who knows what might happen there?
